a few NSVs…

Gastric Bypass, General Nonsense No Comments »

This week I have had a few NSVs (non-scale victories)…

2 trouser suits actually fit - and I can button the jackets closed! I will have to try some others
1 top is actually baggy
1 bra has gone to next line of hooks
Some of my underwear slide down cause they are too big
Lingerie I haven’t worn in ages actually fit
an old bath robe actually closes
I don’t have to lie on the bed to get into my FAVOURITE jeans..

I am only 3 weeks out and although I don’t see the difference, my friends do, and until now, I didn’t believe them!

The panic is over, ReGenesis is alive!

General Nonsense, News, Overheard/Gossip No Comments »

After a few emails back and forth with the music composer, and a very nice email from one of the show’s producers, I can confirm that there will, indeed be a new season of ReGensesis.

I was most honored to recieve the emails, as both have been very forthcoming in relieving my anxiety. It’s nice to see people who care about there fanbase.

I must also recommend that you guys find and enjoy some masterful music by Tom Third, who has a site over at LastFM.
Some of his work has been remastered over at ReGenesis Remixed.

I can only describe it as a bit of Filia Brazilia mixed with some Massive Attack (my all-time fave artist), a splash of Faithless, and a bit of funk thrown in for good measure.

What about ReGenesis you ask?

It has brilliant writing, great stories, and an amazing cast lead by the incredible Peter Outerbridge.

The future is here. Bioterrorism. Designer babies. Frankenfoods. Suddenly Humanity possesses the ability to play god. But is it progress—or madness? Will cutting-edge science be our salvation? Or our demise?

ReGenesis is a new, 13-part one-hour, dramatic series about NorBAC, an organization formed to investigate questionable advances in biotechnology.

The Pandora’s box of biotech is wide open. It’s a modern gold rush, where billions will be made and geo-power will be staked. And everyone’s involved: governments, multinational drug companies, rogue states, and terrorist. But ideas can’t be put back in—once they’re out, they’re out.

One of the main reasons I started medical school was because I wanted to work in this field, biotechnology, bioweaponry and nanotechnology.
I had a particular interest in Ebola - and still do :)
I quickly changed my mind once I became pregnant with my daughter, as I did not want to take any chances - I wanted to see her grow up.

I can only describe my love for this show as “More abundant than my love of House (or House MD)”.

I am so very excited!

Christmas at the office is bad for diversity…

General Nonsense No Comments »

Countless workplace studies have shown that a diverse staff is likely to outperform a homogenous staff. So with all this talk about diversity, why are we still hanging Christmas wreaths and playing Christmas music at work?

Not everyone at the office celebrates Christmas, and acting as if everyone has the “holiday spirit” squelches the spirit of workplace diversity.

Diversity in the workplace is not “diverse religious expression.” Diversity should express itself in how people approach business problems. Religion is not appropriate at work in the same way that politics is not appropriate; both are divisive.

Corporate events that are tied to religion make people who don’t practice that religion feel like outsiders and therefore inhibit diversity. (And those of you who think Happy Holidays is non-sectarian, please realize that all non-Christians I know hear “Happy Holidays” as “Merry Christmas to those of you who do not celebrate it.”)

For me, the Christmas problem starts early — at Yom Kippur, which usually falls in September. This is the most important holiday for Jews, but I have never gotten this holiday off from work. I take vacation days to observe Yom Kippur. And I don’t complain about using my vacation days because it is absurd to think everyone should stop working because the Jews have a holiday.

But as workers, Jews have to observe Christmas. For us, it’s a weird day to be off from work. No stores are open. There’s nothing on TV. Most restaurants are closed. It’s a boring day, a good day to be at work. So when Christmas rolls around, many Jews would be happy to work on the 25th and have a more useful day off. But we are forced to take a holiday.

Given the nothingness of Christmas to most Jews, it is absurd how much Christmas cheer that Jews partake in just to fit in at the office.

Vendors send Christmas cards, co-workers say “Happy Holidays,” clients expect Christmas gifts. Jews partake in all these moments because the best way to succeed at work is to fit in. The bottom line is that Jews are forced to be what they are not in order to fit in, and that is never good when you’re trying to promote the diverse expression of ideas.

I can already hear the uproar: “Christmas is not about religion!” It’s always the Christians who say that. Christmas is about religion because Christians celebrate Christmas.

Jews don’t do Christmas. Muslims don’t do Christmas. Buddhists don’t do Christmas. And no one rants and raves about how religious or nonreligious Christmas is except the Christians. That’s because they feel they have authority over the holiday — it’s theirs.

Here’s an exercise for those of you who have gotten to the bottom of this column and are infuriated (I know you’re there — you send e-mail to me every December): Try to see my point of view. Even if you don’t agree with me, acknowledge that my point of view represents a minority in the workplace. If you cannot step outside yourself and see things from a minority perspective, you will not be able to manage minorities. And if you want your career to be upwardly mobile, you need to be able to manage diversity.

If you want to be kind and generous and contribute to peace on earth in the New Year, help minorities to fit in.

Open your mind to experiences that are different than your own.

Look at ways your office makes diversity difficult and fix them.

You can start by getting rid of those Christmas wreaths and save the Christmas music for your headphones!

yay Ariel!

My wonderful daughter Ariel has won a photography contest, as well as a spelling bee beethis week!

Ariel

She now goes to the school finals for the bee, and the district finals for the photography. I can’t wait!

I am sooo very PROUD of her - Rob’s bought her a digi-cam for crimbo so she doesn’t have to use her dad’s and to encourage this hobby. I will take her out to some gardening centres throughout the break to practice picture-taking together.

She wants to be my photographer for my upcoming nuptials. I told her that I want her to be my maid-of-honour and agreed to letting her be my reception photographer.

Since she has been diagnosed with absent seizures and epilepsy and getting properly treated, she has improved all of her skills, and was also invited to a special smart programme for the school district for highly intelligent children. She attends a special school once a week, and the kids learn about many more subjects and use more hands-on approach than the other more-average schools. The program is called SEARCH (Students Experiencing Appropriate Creative and Research Happenings), and is part of Moore Public schools Gifted Education Program. Click here to visit their website.

So Ariel, after crimbo, I will show you this post, just to let you know that I am so very proud of you.

You are growing up so very fast, and although that scares me, I am excited, too.

You mean the world to me, and I am thankful every day that we have such a great relationship.

I have just updated my my phone to a WM5.0 Orange M3100 (Hermes).

My old phone could sync to my wireless laptop using AS 4.1 without issue.

When I try to sync the M3100 via USB it kills my 802.11g WPA connection . (Intel 2200). It also knocks down ALL of my Wireless Access Points killing three other laptop connections on my network (hell yes I am a hardcore gadget nut).

If I sync via Bluetooth my wireless is not killed.

If I sync via USB with WPA-PSK turned off (unencrypted link) my wireless is not killed.

If I sync via USB with a physical ethernet connection I maintain network connectivity.

Once my wireless is killed the laptop needs a reboot to regain stability.

My easiest solution is to sync via Bluetooth, unfortunately Microsoft have seen fit to disable WMP10 sync via bluetooth - no music transfers, no license updates. :(

My second easiest solution is to disable WPA-PSK and run my wireless link unencrypted. Like yeah, I really want to do this! I refuse to do this.

My third easiest solution is to tether my laptop to a blue wire :(

The fourth solution is to use ActiveStink 3.8 (downloading now). FYI this shit didn’t work!

Doing a google search shows this is a confirmed problem. But nowhere can I see suggestions that MS might fix this *BUG*.

I tried the Airfix.com solution with no luck. The MS website also doesn’t list any support options for ActiveStink.

Does anyone have suggestions apart from these four choices?

well, well, since my ickle sister and I have such broad differences of opinion when it comes to Politics (I hate Bush and think he should be impeached, and she voted for the war-mongering bastard) I decided to get this for our holiday break - and possibly as a Xmas gift for her.

war on terror game

Everyone starts with the best intentions. Then things start to get cramped. Then you notice your neighbour has more oil than you. Before long, war is waged, nukes are dropped, revolutions are fought and terrorists are doing your dirty work, before turning on you…

the game

The first holiday I have spent with my family in over 12 years - will prove an interesting one!

This is very cool. The Imagini points you to products based on visual stimuli, and it works really well!

are you a code monkey?

General Nonsense No Comments »

You may be a code monkey if…

You ask new acquaintances to export an API and provide relevant documentation prior to exchanging any verbal communication.

Your book collection contains more lines of code than an operating environment distribution.

You try to end conversations with Ctrl-X Ctrl-C (or, for you sixers out there, ESC :q!)

You thought of the words “negotiation phase” or “handshake protocol” while reading the first item in this list.
